POWER, INFLUENCE, AND NETWORKS

This course provides students with a set of tools for understanding and managing power and political dynamics.

A fundamental component of success for a leader is having a clear understanding of power and influence processes and knowing how to act on that knowledge. Ultimately, organizations are political entities where power and influence are key mechanisms by which things get accomplished.

After taking this course students will be better able to understand the distribution and sources of power within organizations; building their own sources of power; formulate strategies for enhancing their social networks and for understanding how these social connections may be rich sources of power and influence; leverage influence styles and communicate with others more effectively; and anticipate and guard against the pitfalls of power, such that they can use power and influence in an authentic and ethical manner.

ADVANCED PHD SEMINAR IN ORGANIZATIONAL THEORY

This PhD Seminar introduces dominant approaches to scientific inquiry in the social sciences, particularly focusing on the area of Organizational Theory. We will then work through existing research across a number of research topics and cultivate critical skills for the evaluation of cutting-edge research.

Throughout the semester students will: (1) develop a greater appreciation for how sociologists and organization theorists apply sociological concepts and frameworks to the study of various topics, (2) develop critical skills for the evaluation of cutting-edge work in these research community; (c) and be better prepared to contribute to research in these traditions. Through discussions of existing research, we will explore a range of research methodologies used by social scientists and consider strengths, limitations, and tradeoffs for each.

STRATEGIES FOR BEING INFLUENTIAL

At all levels of the organization, being successful at work hinges on effectively communicating, and gaining buy-in for, your innovations and ideas.

This session uses a multipronged approach to help participants learn about their tendencies in using influence and to provide them with the tools necessary for being influential in interpersonal interactions. Drawing on leading research and interactive simulations, participants get hands-on experience with these tools enabling them to apply them in their own work more seamlessly.
